Happy
When I first heard the song ‘Happy’ that my teenagers were listening to, I thought it was just a simple, catchy tune. But, I didn’t quite get why they liked it so much. I soon realized I had a bit of a narrow view about certain types of music and that my music tastes were quite selective. My opinion started to change when I discovered this song was featured in one of my favorite movies, ‘Despicable Me’. That was an ‘aha!’ moment for me.
Meet Pharrell
A few years later, I watched some interviews and classes given by Pharrell Williams, the artist behind ‘Happy’. I was really impressed by his views on music and life. He made me see how I had been somewhat arrogant and judgmental. Pharrell said he’s a musician who loves writing songs, and he simply writes what he likes. He also mentioned that he never knows which of his songs will become hits – that’s up to the audience, not him. That’s a powerful thought.
Pharrell knows his role and how important it is for all of us to understand where we stand in life. His words made me think about self-identity and our actions. He says, ‘I am a songwriter, and the audience are the decision-makers.’ How many of us truly realize this?
If we embrace this concept, appreciation and gratitude come naturally. It aligns with what many spiritual leaders say: ‘Gratitude brings an abundant life.’ But abundance isn’t just about material wealth. Self-awareness is key to leading a fulfilling life, and it’s a part of our journey.
Humble Man
Pharrell’s humble confession as a world-class songwriter and artist made me reflect on who I am. In our society, he provides a clear example: he is a songwriter, we are the audience who enjoys and decides what we like. We need artists like Pharrell Williams to lift our spirits and help us momentarily forget our struggles. His music makes us dance and feel lighter. I deeply appreciate his love for music and his personal philosophy about his identity. Similarly, I love teaching and sharing my thoughts, and my students decide which classes are useful for them. We need each other – I need my students, and they need me. I’m grateful to my students for listening and giving me the chance to share, just as they show their appreciation through notes and emails.
Implication
This idea of mutual dependence and appreciation isn’t just limited to the classroom or the music industry. It’s a universal concept that applies to all aspects of our community. Just like how Pharrell Williams relies on his audience to appreciate and support his music, every one of us plays a role in our community. Our interactions, big or small, shape the experiences of those around us.
Think about it – every time you interact with someone, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact. It could be as simple as smiling at a stranger, helping a neighbor, or even just listening to a friend. These actions might seem small, but they create ripples in our community, spreading kindness and understanding.
In a way, we’re all like Pharrell’s songs. Each of us has our unique melody and rhythm that we bring to the world. And while we may not always know who will appreciate our ‘music’, it’s important to keep playing it. Our individual contributions, whether they are in the form of art, teaching, helping, or simply being kind, are what make our community vibrant and diverse.
Life is collections of joys
It’s also about finding joy in what we do and sharing that joy with others. Pharrell’s music, for instance, is more than just a collection of notes and lyrics; it’s a vehicle for happiness and positivity. In the same way, when we find something we’re passionate about – be it teaching, learning, creating, or anything else – and share that passion with others, we’re contributing to a happier, more connected community.
So, the next time you hear ‘Happy’ or any song that brings a smile to your face, remember the power of your actions and the role you play in your community. Embrace your identity, share your passions, and appreciate the interconnectedness of all our roles. Just like how a simple song can uplift our spirits, each one of us has the power to make a positive impact in the lives of those around us.

More than Song Writer.
More than Song writer
Beyond being a brilliant songwriter, Pharrell Williams has become something more to me – a thinker who has opened my eyes to my own preconceptions and biases. His approach to life and music has been a kind of wake-up call, helping me realize the ‘thick shell’ I had built around my understanding of the world.
Pharrell’s journey and his words remind us that we often view the world through lenses colored by our experiences, beliefs, and prejudices. Just as I initially dismissed his music without truly understanding its depth, we sometimes overlook the richness and diversity around us due to our limited perspectives. His insights have encouraged me to look beyond my initial judgments and to appreciate the wider variety of experiences and viewpoints that make up our world.
Teaching “Empathy”
This realization has been a powerful lesson in empathy and open-mindedness. It’s about recognizing that everyone has a unique story and perspective, and that there’s value in listening and learning from others, even if they seem different from us. This is especially true in our communities, where diversity of thought, background, and experience enriches our collective experience.
Pharrell’s role as a thinker extends far beyond his music. He challenges us to break down our own barriers and to embrace a more inclusive and understanding view of the world. He inspires us to question our assumptions and to be more mindful of how we perceive and interact with others.
In essence, Pharrell Williams represents a guiding light towards greater self-awareness and openness. His music and words have led me to a deeper understanding of myself and my place in the community. They remind me that our growth as individuals and as a society lies in our ability to shed our preconceptions, listen with open hearts, and appreciate the diverse tapestry of humanity that surrounds us.
